THE WARRENERS ARCHIVE

A record of The Warreners activities from 2000 to early 2001.

MARCH-MAY 2000
Our March meeting was well attended and the members enjoyed a quiz which proved very successful, even though quite difficult at times. Sheila won with Ann as her partner, getting 18 out of 20 right.

In May we were entertained by Bernie Smith on his keyboard. He brought some song sheets for us, and we enjoyed a nostalgic sing-along.

The members who had gone on the coach trip to Turners, Northampton, were most enthusiastic about it. Thank you to Ed Latimer who arranged it all and who has written his account of the outing as I was unable to go.

APRIL 2000, SPRING OUTING
We had our spring outing on April 5 when a coachload of us visited Turners at Northampton. After enjoying a good lunch we were treated to an afternoon of Old Time Music Hall entertainment. This included comedy acts, sing-a-longs, dancing girls and an excellent recital by their organist on the Wurlitzer.

The tea break afforded an opportunity for a ride on the galloping horses. Some of our ladies declined, whilst others demurely sat side saddle. There were, however, reports of an inch or two of knee observed.

Altogether a most enjoyable trip, and we look forward to our next day out, when we hope to visit Bourton on the Water on June 7.

JUNE-AUGUST 2000
On Wednesday, June 7, Ed Latimer had arranged a trip to Bourton on the Water, a popular place for a day out and as the sun was shining, we all enjoyed the many places of interest. Some of us took the opportunity to visit Hazel (a Warrener for many years) in her beautiful new home on the outskirts of the town.

Instead of our usual meeting in the village hall, Noel James and Mollie had invited us to the Rectory for a meal, and what a meal it was. The menu was poached salmon, honey glazed ham, Coronation chicken, cocktail sausages, various salads, new potatoes, assorted sweets which were fabulous, coffee and tea, wine, beer and various non alcoholic drinks. I overheard one of the Warreners saying that it was like being at a very posh wedding. Our thanks to Noel and Mollie for a most enjoyable afternoon, which ended with a singsong. It was all much appreciated.

Ann Woski has taken over the sandwich making from Vera Castle who has been giving us tasty contributions to our teas for a long time. Our thanks, Vera, for all your hard work.

Thank you to all the supportive members who help keep the club going.

JULY 2000, THAMES OUTING
On July 18 a group of eleven of us enjoyed a leisurely day in the sunshine on the Thames. Commencing on the Oxford Canal aboard the Venturer, a 70ft narrowboat, we made our way past the back gardens of homes in Jericho and Botley, eventually joining the wider waters of the river near Wolvercote. This took us through lovely countryside and through the picturesque locks of Hinksey and Iffley with their wonderful floral displays, a tribute to the green-fingered lock-keepers.

Our destination, Sandford-on-Thames, was conveniently reached at lunchtime where we made our way to the riverside pub, The King's Arms. After a good lunch and group photographs, obligingly taken by a bystander as we handed over our cameras one by one, we were ready for the return journey.

The three-hour trip each way allowed plenty of time for tongues to wag, and a great deal of village gossip covering the last half century seemed to come under review. We finally disembarked at 5.30pm after another thoroughly enjoyable outing.

We are now looking forward to a day at Brighton for our September trip.

SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER 2000
In September Barbara organised the meeting in Muriel's absence. Anna and Sheila were in charge of a successful bring and buy where there were some good bargains to be found. Barbara took orders for a fish and chip tea for our meeting in October. Bingo and a coffee were enjoyed by all.

October brought the much anticipated fish and chip tea. Peter Durnin from North Aston actually cooked everything on the village hall car park. This meant the food was fresh and piping hot as half a dozen volunteers rushed in and out with hot plates and trays. Peter's food is delicious, the mushy pea fritters (a new dish to most of us) were very tasty.

All our new members are now settling in well. It is much appreciated by Barbara and by me when members help with the chores at the meeting, from putting out chairs and tables, to sweeping up and washing up. A real help.

We are now making plans for Christmas.

JANUARY 2001
"Our Christmas party seems to get better every year," said one of our members, and Barbara and I agree. Having Ann Woski to organise the food is such a help; she goes to a great deal of trouble to provide a sumptuous Christmas lunch, and her presentation is most appetising, even allowing fresh salmon for the two vegetarians. What a spread! Thank you Ann.

Eric Hudson controlled a special bingo for which Harold and Sylvia Golder had bought good prizes. Noel and Mollie James led us in a rousing selection of carols, which was followed by a special raffle with a prize for everyone. At 4.30pm we ended the party with a mince pie and tea.

We could not do any of this without a lot of help. Our thanks go to Maureen James and Peter, for making sure, with help from Veronica Lough-Scott, that the village hall was decorated; what a difference this makes to the atmosphere.

Helping to serve were our usual team of Veronica, Sallyanne Mildenhall and Sharon (Barbara's daughter), who worked so hard (and did all the washing-up!). It was a lot of hard work for everyone, but we all enjoyed it.

January: What a lot of laughs we had. Entertaining us was a group, 'The Friendly Folk Dancers', from Kidlington. They were excellent, dancing, singing and telling funny stories. I think we all agree that we must ask them for a return visit.

I am glad to report that Ed Latimer is now out of hospital after a successful operation. We missed you Ed.

We welcomed Mr and Mrs Kaura to the club. It was good to seem them enjoying themselves. We still have room for more members. If you are over 60, we meet every second Wednesday in the month at the Village Hall, 2pm. You would be most welcome.

Thank you again to all the members and friends who help make all this possible. To end this account I must thank the friends who made generous donations to our funds, which enabled us to have a wonderful Christmas party. Heyfordian Travel sent a most generous raffle prize, and Mr Laveland from Heyford Consortium sent a large and much appreciated cheque. Our next meeting will be February 14.
